Headphones & Microphone
  • Use headphones. This will help with privacy issues, as well as sound quality for you and your fellow participants.
  • Check your microphone before the event to make sure it is working.
Don’t forget to mute yourself when you are not speaking.
  • Download Zoom or be sure your Zoom app is up-to-date if you already have it. (Within Zoom, under the menu bar, choose “Check for Updates.”)
  • Your Zoom Profile: Update your Zoom account to include a profile photo. That way, if you need to turn off your video, we can still see your face and know who you are.
To do so, log into your Zoom account, go to “Profile” and click “Change” on the profile picture. Choose an image that reflects your essence.
  • Join Zoom from your computer. To participate in all the features of the training, you should use a computer or tablet you can type into. If you cannot do so and need to join by phone, please download the Zoom app on your phone rather than dialing in. This will improve the quality of your experience, as you will be able to see the participants, not just hear them.
  • If you need to dial in, join your phone with your Zoom ID. If your internet is unstable, or you need to take a step away from your computer and join in via phone, please be sure to enter your participant ID as you join on the phone. This way, you’ll only be assigned to one breakout room. You can find your participant ID by clicking on tapping on the “i” (information) symbol in the top left of the meeting window. It typically is a six-digit number.
  • Plan to join in from a space where you can feel private, close the door, remain undisturbed, and keep others’ shares confidential.
  • Set yourself up for success before the weekend starts by letting friends & family know that you’re going to be on a weekend training, that you may not be in contact with them, and that they may hear you engaged in some noisy activities.
  • Let family or roommates know that they should not disturb you unless it is an emergency.
  • Space: Choose a space to be in that you enjoy, perhaps one that is near a window.
Find a position to put your computer or device in that captures you in a sitting position and also a standing position. (We’ll mix it up during the weekend as we create state changes, and we’ll want to see each others’ faces, not just belly buttons when we stand.)
Consider what is behind you, as it will show up on your screen.
Make sure there is room to take notes and have refreshments.
  • Stay in the light:
Make sure your space is well lit, with the light on your face, not behind you. Put a small lamp in front if you can. Bright lights in your background make it difficult for others to see you.
  • Meals and snacks: eat dinner before the training begins on Friday, and breakfast before the training continues on Saturday. Plan for one midday meal break on Saturday (exact time TBD). During that break, you will be engaged in activities with your cohort, so prepare a beautiful working lunch that takes no more than 15 minutes to prepare/assemble/heat. Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks readily available.
  • Dress comfortably and in a way that you feel good about.
  • Rejuvenate! Stretch, look away from the screen, close your eyes periodically, and drink water. You’ll be welcome to take short bio-breaks on your own schedule as needed.

During the training:

  • Engage creatively with our performative learning tools.
  • Participate fully in the exercises and material.
  • Use the chat to comment, share, express, and ask questions.
  • “Raise your hand” by typing that you want to share in the chat.
